SHAWN S. LEALOS

Shawn Lealos is one of the co-founders of Starving Dogs Productions. He started the company with Rob McIlrath in 2000, following his completion of a Bachelor's Degree in Professional Writing from The Gaylord School of Journalism at the University of Oklahoma. While continuing his education and working towards a second degree in Film and Video Studies, he and Rob decided to give film making a try.

Shawn's first screenplay would turn out to be the catalyst that would introduce Starving Dogs Productions to the world. That screenplay, an adaptation of the Stephen King short story I Know What You Need would be filmed as part of King's Dollar Baby program, created to give student filmmakers a chance to get their names out there. Shawn did everything in his power to do just that.

Using Stephen King's name, Shawn networked until a number of worldwide websites were promoting Starving Dogs work and thanks to his work in this area, Starving Dogs Productions' films has been seen in countries such as The Netherlands and Argentina as well as King's home town of Bangor, Maine.
Shawn has written, directed or produced all Starving Dogs films and is working hard to create The Starving Dog Show as well as preparing to put his next two scripts into development stages.

Shawn also writes for two web sites (CHUD.COM and 411MANIA.COM) and you can read all his work at his personal website (SHAWNLEALOS.COM).

What is the first film you ever saw?
I never got to watch movies as a kid. The first movie I went to was Herbie Rides Again, but the first movie as an adult was Batman (1989)

What is your favorite film of all time?
Magnolia.

What is your favorite line in a film?
Wow, it changes all the time. Um, right now I like "You either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain." - The Dark Knight

What movie made you realize film was an art form?
Magnolia. It is perfectly crafted.

What movie do you consider your guilty pleasure?
BASEketball. I don't know how anyone could not find it funny.

Who is your favorite movie character of all time?
Either John McClain from the original Die Hard or Martin Riggs from the original Lethal Weapon.

Who is your favorite director of all time?
Quentin Tarantino

Who is the most impressive filmmaker working today?
Paul Thomas Anderson and Christopher Nolan for two different reasons

What is the most important quality of a good actor?
The ability to become The Character and not just an actor reading lines.

Who is your favorite actor/actress of all time?
Brad Pitt

If you could remake any movie, what would it be?
I'd like to remake The Stand, but for a network like HBO as a miniseries. This way it could be done right without the censors the last attempt had to deal with.

What is your best quality as an director?
My willingness to listen to actors and change on a dime if their ideas are actually better than the ones I originally came up with.

Finish the sentence: A perfect movie is...
... one that tells a gripping story that actually holds meaning but still entertains on a base level with actors and a director who believes in what they are doing.

What piece of advice do you have for actors?
The movie is not about one actor. No one is better than the project as a whole and an actor who believes they are better than everyone around them is an actor that will hurt the movie more than he will help it. Check your ego at the door.

Other than movies, what are you most passionate about?
I love to write more than just about anything else. If all I could ever do for the rest of my life is earn a living as a writer, I would be a happy man.
